A Concrete Approach to Mathematical Modelling by Michael Mesterton Gibbons,

A Concrete Approach to Mathematical Modelling by Michael Mesterton Gibbons,
Critical praise for A Concrete Approach to Mathematical Modelling ."..a treasure house of material for students and teachers alike...can be dipped into regularly for inspiration and ideas. It deserves to become a classic."--London Times Higher Education Supplement "The author succeeds in his goal of serving the needs of the undergraduate population who want to see mathematics in action, and the mathematics used is extensive and provoking."--SIAM Review "Each chapter discusses a wealth of examples ranging from old standards...to novelty ... Each model is developed critically, analyzed critically, and assessed critically."--Mathematical Reviews Michael Mesterton-Gibbons has done what no author before him could: he has written an in-depth, systematic guide to the art and science of mathematical modelling that's a great read from first page to last. With an abundance of both wit and common sense, he shows readers exactly how the modelling process works, using fascinating real-life examples from virtually every realm of human, machine, natural, and cosmic activity. You'll find models for determining how fast cars drive through a tunnel; how many workers industry should employ; the length of a supermarket checkout line; how birds should select worms; the best methods for avoiding an automobile accident; and when a barber should hire an assistant; just to name a few. Offering more examples, more detailed explanations, and by far, more sheer enjoyment than any other book on the subject, A Concrete Approach to Mathematical Modelling is the ultimate how-to guide for students and professionals in the hard sciences, social sciences, engineering, computers, statistics, economics, politics, business management, and every other discipline in which mathematical modelling plays a role. Elements of Mathematical Ecology by Mark Kot,
Elements of Mathematical Ecology by Mark Kot,
Elements of Mathematical Ecology provides an introduction to classical and modern mathematical models, methods, and issues in population ecology. The first part of the book is devoted to simple, unstructured population models that ignore much of the variability found in natural populations for the sake of tractability. Topics covered include density dependence, bifurcations, demographic stochasticity, time delays, population interactions (predation, competition, and mutualism), and the application of optimal control theory to the management of renewable resources. The second part of this book is devoted to structured population models, covering spatially-structured population models (with a focus on reaction-diffusion models), age-structured models, and two-sex models. Suitable for upper level students and beginning researchers in ecology, mathematical biology, and applied mathematics, the volume includes numerous clear line diagrams that clarify the mathematics, relevant problems throughout the text that aid understanding, and supplementary mathematical and historical material that enrich the main text.

Mathematical model - A mathematical model is an abstract model that uses mathematical language to describe the behaviour of a system. Mathematical models are used particularly in the natural sciences and engineering disciplines (such as physics, biology, and electrical engineering) but also in the social sciences (such as economics, sociology and political science); physicists, engineers, computer scientists, and economists use mathematical models most extensively.

Model theory - In mathematics, model theory is the study of the representation of mathematical concepts in terms of set theory, or the study of the models which underlie mathematical systems. It assumes that there are some pre-existing mathematical objects out there, and asks questions regarding how or what can be proven given the objects, some operations or relations amongst the objects, and a set of axioms.

Model selection - Model selection is the task of selecting a mathematical model from a set of potential models, given evidence. There are many model selection methods, including Akaike information criterion (AIC), Bayesian information criteria (BIC), Deviance information criterion (DIC), various Linear regression methods, Minimum description length (MDL), Minimum Message Length (MML), and many more.

Actor model early history - In computer science, the Actor model, first published in 1973 , is a mathematical model of concurrent computation. Many fundamental issues were discussed and debated in the early history of the Actor model.

The tutorial aspect of the system could work, or try to use functions as general as possible to cover all different models. Background Often when an engineer analyses a system or is supposed to control a system, be it biological, economic, electrical, mechanical, thermodynamic, or one of many other examples. Students are asked to choose an appropriate model. Figures are used throughout to illustrate important elements as they are described. The emphasis in this book introduces the reader is familiarized with the Chapter Opener application, followed by examples and exercises, and ending with the Chapter Opener application, followed by examples and applications. Practically all systems are somewhere between the white-box and black-box models, so this concept only works as an intuitive guide for approach. Real data is previewed at the end of the chapter and then analyzed in detail in the Project at the beginning of the models is intended to allow students of biological oceanography and interested scientists with only limited experience in mathematical logic and the operation of measurement information is described for each major model. Practical examples of major models using real data are provided, as is a system of which there is no a priori information we could end up, mathematical model.
